Manu-o-Kū Bird Community Art Project -Saturday, May 29, and Sunday, May 30, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  This is an artsy and family-friendly take on dedicating messages to someone special, the community is invited to craft paper Manu-o-Kū birds and write inspiring messages on their creations. Bird crafting based on the white fairy tern will be held at the small park in front of H Mart in Kaka‘ako. The birds will be displayed in a temporary community art installation through June 13, on the fence of The Barn at Salt at Our Kaka‘ako, 327 Keawe St. Younger keiki will also be able to make Manu-o-Kū finger puppets to take home. As part of the celebration of Honolulu’s official bird, at 11 a.m. May 29, you can learn all about this native bird from marine biologist Susan Scott, author of Hawai‘i’s White Tern, Manu-o-Kū, an Urban Seabird. She’ll share their unique characteristics, significance to Hawai‘i and the Hawaiian culture, and ways to protect this feathered friend. CELEBRATE Micronesian Poetry. Saturday, May 29, 12:30 p.m.  Carrying Culture: Micronesia kicks off with “Voices of Life,” a livestreamed event featuring poetry readings and discussion with three poets featured in Indigenous Literatures from Micronesia, an anthology of creative writing from a region that is homeland to many Hawai‘i residents. Find livestream link via honolulumuseum.org

Positions available working at our school: Substitute Educational Assistant ($14.79 per hour) We are seeking substitute Educational Assistants (apply through the school) and full time Educational Assistants (apply through the Hawaiʻi DOE). A paraeducator (Educational Assistants) works under the supervision of teachers or other professional practitioners. An Educational Assistantʻs job varies depending on the needs of the students and school during a particular period. An educational assistant should be open and flexible to support the needs of the students and school. Their jobs are instructional in nature and they provide other direct services to children and youth and their families, including: 1:1 Tutoring 1:1 Behavioral Support Assist with classroom management Conduct parental involvement activities Provide instructional support services under the direct supervision of a highly qualified teacher or professional practitioner. Minimum requirements: Forty-eight semester credits of baccalaureate-level courses from a regionally accredited institution of higher education recognized by the Department. The 48 credits may be from various program or academic subject areas. In addition, 6 of the 48 credits must have been for math and English courses at the baccalaureate level. Or, An Associate in Arts (AA) or Science (AS) degree from a regionally accredited institution recognized by the Department. The credits earned for the degree must have been for courses that are baccalaureate level. Or, A certificate with a minimum score of 459 on the ParaPro Assessment provided by the Educational Testing Service.  ParaPro Assessment The ParaPro Assessment is a computer-based assessment option for Educational Assistants (EA) and part-time Paraprofessional Tutors (PPT) to meet Department of Education minimum qualifications for employment. The administration of the ParaPro Assessment is managed by the Community School for Adults (CSA).  Substitute Teacher ($151.71-$178.42/day) First priority will be given to candidates who've completed a State-Approved Teacher Education program which is a full time teacher-training program that includes student teaching in a Grade K-12 setting. Individuals with a bachelor's degree are also eligible and will need to complete a substitute teacher course at an adult education community school. *Hawai'i Department of Education does permit individuals to substitute teach without a bachelor's degree in hard to staff locations.
