April 27 is Poem in Your Pocket Day!
Please encourage your child to find, or write, a poem they can carry in their pocket.
Invite them to practice reading their poem so they are ready to read it to their peers.
Be sure they can pronounce the words, read it clearly & with feeling.  
Invite them to consider how to read the poem--are there parts that should be emphasized, read quickly or s l o w l y?
Video tape & photograph students & their poems.  Tweet them out using the hashtags #pocketpoem #dkies

Meal Payments
Checks will be accepted till May 1, 2017.  Cash only deposits will be accepted till May 19, 2017.  NO OVERDRAFTS will be permitted after May 19, 2017.  Please be sure your child has sufficient funds to last till the end of the school year!
        Reduced Meals = .30 (breakfast), .40 (lunch), .70 (breakfast and lunch)
Regular Meals  = 1.10 (breakfast), 2.50 (lunch), $3.60 (breakfast and lunch)

Teacher Appreciation
Our PTO is planning a garden themed week May 1 - 5 to thank our staff for their hard work throughout the year. Asking for help to donate food or time. Either email or click on this link 

Families with children who will be enrolling into kindergarten for the school year 2018-19, including those children affected by the change to the kindergarten entry age, are encouraged to apply.  The POD program provides child care payments to eligible families so that their child is able to receive up to a year of preschool experience prior to their entry into kindergarten.  Funding for POD is limited, priority for program selection are detailed in the POD administrative rules which can be found at the link below: OF HUMAN SERVICES NOTICE OF PRESCHOOL OPEN DOORS APPLICATION PERIOD 
Pursuant to Hawaii Administrative Rules, Chapter 17-799-5, notice is hereby given that the Department of Human Services will be accepting applications for the Preschool Open Doors (POD) program starting May 1, 2017 through the closing date of May 31, 2017. Applications received during this period are for consideration for POD program participation during the period of July 1, 2017 through June 30, 2018.
Interested families may request an application beginning May 1, 2017 from the Department’s POD contractor, PATCH, through their website or by calling:

If you will be PCSing or changing schools please come into the office to fill out a release form.  We do ask for at least 2 weeks notice.  We will then be able to have a packet ready for you.  For end of school year releases the packets will be ready on June 1st.

Wed. April 26             PTO General Membership Meeting 8am - 9am in the cafeteria. Coffee and donuts and a chance to meet new PTO Board members for next year and vote them in. Let your voice be heard, come to talk story with new and old PTO members about what you would like to see at our school next year.

Community Events

April 21     Family Movie Night at Kaena Community Center. Bring your family to watch Moana at 6:30pm.  Bring your blankets, chairs and favorite snacks.  Light snacks provided while supplies last.

April 21     Aiea High school presents a Family Fun Fair from 4pm - 9pm. Food booths, entertainment, games, rides, a petting zoo and much more.  A wristband for rides costs $20 and scrips are 50 cents each.  Call 382-7713 or

April 22     Family Nite - Learn how to make an eyelash yarn lei and a lei made of
ti-leaves with Schofield Barracks Arts and Crafts starting at 4:30 p.m. 
Pre-registration is required.  All supplies included. Children 12 and younger must be
accompanied by an adult. Call 655-4202.

April 22     Mauka to makai environmental expo at Waikiki Aquarium from 9am - 2pm for FREE.  The 10th Annual Expo features crafts, hand-on educational exhibits, live entertainment, plant giveaways, fish releases and more.

April 22     Earth Day at Waimea Valley from 8:30am - 3pm.Help Waimea Valley malama honua. Pre-registration required at 638-5855 or

April 23     Lions Club breakfast fundraiser at Ka'ala Elementary school. For $6.00 you get scrambled eggs, sausages, steamed rice, banana bread, pineapple chunks and a drink.  Tickets may be purchased from Lions Club members April 22 at Longs Drugs or Tamuras from 10am - 2pm.  Or call Jack Kampfer at 621-0852

April 24     Employment Orientation — New to the island and looking for employment? This
class at the Schofield Barracks ACS from 10-11:30 a.m. will orientate you to 
employment opportunities on Oahu. Learn about Spousal Preference and the Priority
Placement Program for Spouses (PPP-S) seeking federal employment. Also
offered is information on civilian sector opportunities, contractors, resume
writing classes, career fairs and opportunities to further your career and
education. Call 655-4227 to register.

April 26     Earth Day at Kalakaua Community Center from 2pm - 5pm. Come early and take the Earth Day Passport Challenge. the first 300 kids to complete the passport will receive a great earth friendly prize.  Enjoy hands-on mural painting, make and take planting activity, bike rodeo, keiki ID fingerprinting and more. Bring an old tank top and design a one of a kind tote. Cool exhibits and fun activities for the entire family.

April 26     Play Mornings at ACS - Meet other moms and dads, share information,
parenting tips, and give your infant/toddler a chance to interact with other
